Labiaplasty (Labia Minora Surgery)
If you are afflicted with an oversized, asymmetric or misshapen labia minora, resulting in uncomfortable intercourse, irritation with exercise, visibility in swimsuits/clothes, moisture retention or self-esteem issues, labia minora reduction (labiaplasty, labia plasty, labioplasty or vaginal rejuvenation) may be an excellent solution.
Dr. Diehl takes care of many patients in the Raleigh, Durham, and surrounding area with enlarged labia minora. The inner vaginal lips exhibit a very wide range of normal, so having enlarged labia minora is not necessarily abnormal, but in some patients it may cause irritation. The prominent tissue may have been present since puberty or changed with pregnancy or hormonal fluctuations throughout a woman’s lifetime.
Many patients complain of discomfort during daily activities due to the size of their labia minora. Prominence of this tissue can lead to discomfort with exercise, rubbing and “pinching” with normal daily activities, discomfort with intercourse, and visibility in swimsuits and tight clothing. Reducing the size of the labia minora can be very corrective when excessive tissue bulk is causing problems. This can help reduce social anxiety and discomfort. These procedures are becoming increasingly common. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery 2016 statistics showed that labiaplasty continues to increase yearly, with 23% more procedures performed in 2016 than 2015. At your consultation, Dr. Diehl will discuss whether labiaplasty / vaginal rejuvenation surgery is a good option for your specific needs.
The procedure generally takes 1 hour and is most often performed under local anesthesia. Local anesthesia labiaplasty is very well tolerated by patients. There is also a general anesthesia option in our AAAASF OR if that is your preference.
After surgery, you can expect mild discomfort and swelling. In most cases, these will subside in one-two weeks. Labial incisions rarely result in noticeable scarring.
