Earlobes that have been damaged (stretched or torn) by piercing, wearing heavy earrings, or through a minor accident, can normally be repaired quickly in an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. Dr. Diehl performs earlobe repairs, including gauged earlobes, in the Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill and surrounding area.
The Procedure – Earlobe Repair
We can repair most earlobes in approximately 30 minutes by suturing tears or elongated holes. Local anesthesia is all that is needed for this routine procedure. Gauged earlobes can frequently also be repaired, but it is a more complex procedure. Sutures are placed that will be removed in one week.
Earlobe Repair Recovery
You can expect very mild discomfort for one-two days. There is no wound care other than keeping the area clean. Sutures are removed at one week. Pain medicine is not necessary but Tylenol can be used for mild discomfort. With normal healing, you can safely pierce the ear again after three months. It is important to protect the new scars by using a high SPF sunscreen. This helps to have the least noticeable scar in the long-run. Scar massage with Vitamin E or a scar cream can also help to mature the scar so that it is ready for re-piercing at 3 months. It is also important to avoid trauma (children pulling on earrings, earrings getting caught on sweaters) and heavy earring to avoid a recurrence of tearing or stretching the earlobes.
