Complex Wound Management
Plastic surgery can be effective in reducing scarring and the cosmetic effects of wounds.
Skin Grafts and Flaps
A wound that is wide and difficult or impossible to close directly may be treated with a skin graft. A skin graft is basically a patch of healthy skin that is taken from one area of the body, called the “donor site,” and used to cover another area where skin is missing or damaged. Flap surgery can restore form and function to areas of the body that have lost skin, fat, muscle movement, and/or skeletal support.
Burn Management and Grafting
Skin grafting can be effective in reducing the cosmetic effects of burns.
All Skin Lesions
Skin lesions can be effectively treated using plastic surgery to minimize scarring.
Basal Cell Carcinoma
Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. Although it grows very slowly, if left untreated it can spread into underlying tissue.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma is also fairly common, frequently appearing on the lips, face, or ears. If left untreated, it can spread to lymph nodes and internal organs.
Melanoma Care
Malignant melanoma is less common, but is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. If discovered early enough, it can be completely cured through excision and subsequently reconstructed with skin grafts and flaps.
Lipomas, Sebaceous Cysts, Scar Revisions
Plastic surgery can be performed to reduce scarring from removal of lipomas and sebaceous cysts. Previously scars from any source can also be improved through plastic surgery.
