Diehl Plastic Surgery is pleased to offer ULTHERAPY, the acclaimed non-surgical lifting and toning procedure for facial rejuvination.  Ultherapy was voted “Best In-Office Treatment” in New Beauty’s 2013 Beauty Choice Awards.  See Dr. Diehl featured in the most current issue of New Beauty Magazine.

What is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is the only non-invasive treatment approved by the FDA for lifting the skin on the neck, chin and brow. Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound to lift and tighten loose skin over time, without any downtime.

How is Ultherapy different from other cosmetic procedures?

Ultherapy uses ultrasound technology, first to visualize the layers of the skin and underlying soft tissue layers and then to deliver microscopic points of energy in the layers typically only reached with cosmetic surgical procedures.  This stimulates the growth of new collagen, gradually resulting in firmer and more supple skin over three to six months.  The procedure takes from one hour to two hours.  Because Ultherapy does not affect the surface of the skin there is no downtime and no need to avoid the sun.  It is the perfect summertime treatment.

How is Ultherapy different from lasers?

Cosmetic lasers are used to treat the appearance of the surface of the skin to affect pigment, fine lines, and texture.  Ultherapy targets the support structures below the surface of the skin that are responsible for skin tone and suppleness.  Because lasers and Ultherapy treat different layers, at Diehl Plastic Surgery we often use a combined approach to offer patients optimal results.

Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy?

A good candidate for Ultherapy is someone who is noticing that their skin is starting to sag and lose elasticity.  A lowered eyebrow line, sagging skin on the eyelids, loose skin on the neck or under the chin, and increased jowling along the jawline are often the first signs of “maturing” skin.  Those in their thirties and older who have mild to moderate skin laxity are typically good candidates.

While Ultherapy is not a replacement for a surgical face lift, it is a great option for those who want some lifting and toning but are not ready for surgery.  Individuals who want to be proactive in maintaining a youthful appearance as well as those wanting to prolong the effects of facial surgery are also great candidates.

Where on the body, aside from the face and neck can Ultherapy be used?

Diehl Plastic Surgery has expanded the use of Ultherapy’s lifting and toning capabilities.  We now can treat laxity of the knees, upper arms, chest, and buttocks.  These are “off label” uses for the technology but seem to have safe and effective results.

Does it hurt?

The patient discomfort is variable.  Many patients tolerate the procedure very well with little discomfort while others feel more pain during the treatment. A recent software upgrade called “Ultherapy Amplify” now affords a more comfortable procedure.  If and when any discomfort does occur, it happens while the ultrasound energy is being delivered. This sensation is temporary and is a positive signal that the collagen-building process has been initiated.  At Diehl Plastic Surgery we have experience with pain management and have the ability to offer our patients several pain management options available only through our trained medical staff, such as numbing injections and oral medications.

What is the recovery time?

Typically, patients are able to resume their normal activities and report no pain immediately post-procedure.  Less frequently there may be slight redness for up to an hour or so following the treatment and a small percentage of patients may have slight swelling, tingling, or tenderness to touch.  These effects are mild and temporary in nature.

How long does it last?

The experience has been that this newly created collagen is still present one year post treatment.  However, the aging process does continue and it may be reasonable to have touch-up treatments to keep up with the pace of your personal aging process.

How long does it take to see results?

Some patients see immediate toning of the skin, but the majority of the lifting and toning will take place over the next 3-6 months.  The process continues over the next 6 months with continued but subtle results.
