Tattoo removal is an excellent option for many people in the Raleigh, Durham, Fayetteville, and Goldsboro area. We have patients that would like their tattoos removed for personal and professional (oftentimes military requirements) reasons. Depending on the size, they may be removed in one or serial procedures.
Most procedures are completed under local anesthesia in the procedure room. Tattoo excision involves the removal of the entire tattoo by surgery, and is best used for smaller tattoos. After administering a local anesthetic, Dr. Diehl will remove all of the tattoo or as much of the tattoo as possible, and close the wound with sutures. If your tattoo is too large, it may be possible to remove it with serial excisions. Serial excision means that after the scar has healed and softened and there is some laxity (looseness) of the skin we can remove more of the tattoo as a secondary procedure. Some tattoos are too large for surgical removal (even serial excision) and are better treated with laser or a more extensive surgery with skin grafts. We do not have laser or skin grafting options in this office.
There usually isn’t a significant amount of discomfort with tattoo excision. There will be a resultant scar which can extend beyond the length of the original tattoo. The stitches are removed in 1-2 weeks, depending on the area of the excision. At your consultation, Dr. Diehl will provide realistic expectations for your specific recovery process.
